In each region and among different tribes, the plant is revered for different properties — sometimes medicinal, sometimes magical.

Among the Yanomami, for example, Justicia pectoralis is used as an aphrodisiac for women and is also added to their sacred snuffs. In Colombia, the Kofán people prepare a decoction of a related species to treat symptoms of old age, promoting vitality and longevity. The Shipibo-Conibo of Peru believe that Piri Piri awakens the spirit of work and brings good fortune in fishing and agriculture. In Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions, it is often used in baths and oils to attract luck, love, or protection.
