This sacred Rapé (Hapé) medicine is made by our partner Shawãkaya, a young leader and healer of the Shawãdawa tribe in the Brazilian Amazon, a people known for their deep spiritual practice and connection to the forest. Shawãdawa Rapé is used in traditional rituals for focus, spiritual connection, and clarity, and is prepared under the power of the full moon with Sunu ashes and the sacred herb Kapayuba, a plant the Shawãdawa use to open their visions in ceremony.
Hapé and the Traditions of the Shawãdawa Tribe
The Shawãdawa, or “People of the Macaw,” are an indigenous community living in the Amazon rainforest along the upper Juruá River in Brazil. Their name comes from the Pano linguistic root shared with other forest families like the Yawanawa, Puyanawa, and Kaxinawa. The Shawã people continue to protect their lands, forests, and the ancestral medicines that sustain their culture.
In Shawãdawa tradition, the Rapé (known as Rupusuty in their language) carries the teachings of the plants. It’s used to strengthen the spirit, bring healing, and connect the physical and spiritual worlds. The medicine is prepared through study, prayer, and respect for the guidance of the elders, and is part of the Shawãdawa’s spiritual work with Ayahuasca and healing songs.
Ceremonial Use of Shawãdawa Rapé
For the Shawã people of Brazil, the Hapé ceremony is a ritual used for centering, purification, and connection to the spirit of the forest. Shawãdawa Rapé is a unique blend central to these spiritual practices and is a widely used tool among the Shawãkaya and other practitioners of the region.
This sacred Hapé medicine is made with an herb the Shawãdawa call Kapayuba, used to facilitate visions in ceremony. It’s a consecrated method for deepening awareness and restoring balance, and can be administered solo with the use of a Kuripe pipe or in a group ceremony with a Tepi. Some practitioners observe a simple diet, too, avoiding salt and sugar to better align with the medicine and its teachings.

Absolutely wonderful rapé. Shawãdawa Spiritual is one of my top five favorite rapés, including many beautiful offerings from all vendors I consistently order from. I love combining Shawãdawa Spiritual with Kamayura Pau D’Arco, and/or Yawanawa Menta. It also works well combined with other grounding options, such as Katukina Cacau Super (which includes ceremonial cacau and less mapacho). This is one of three I would even refer to as “magical.” Strong and deep, without being harsh on the body. This is a really special one. Highly recommend. Thank you.
