The Nukini Tribe: Guardians of the Forest and Keepers of Sacred Medicine
Origins and Ancestry: The People of the Onça
The Nukini are an Indigenous people of the southwestern Brazilian Amazon, located in the state of Acre near the border with Peru. They are part of the Pano linguistic family, sharing ancestral roots with other tribes such as the Yawanawá, Katukina, and Huni Kuin. Known as the “People of the Onça” (Jaguar), the Nukini hold the jaguar as a central figure in their cosmology, symbolizing strength, protection, and deep connection to the spirit of the forest.
The Nukini have historically lived in the Juruá River basin, especially along the Moa River, a region rich in biodiversity and sacred geography. Their name, “Nukini,” is believed to be derived from a Quechua term for “painted face,” referencing the facial painting traditions that remain vital in ceremonial life.
First Contact, Cultural Loss, and the Journey of Recovery
Like many Indigenous groups, the Nukini suffered greatly during the rubber boom in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Enslaved, displaced, and forced to work under brutal conditions, many Nukini families were scattered, and much of their traditional knowledge was suppressed or lost.
Throughout the 20th century, the Nukini struggled to maintain their identity under pressure from missionaries, extractivist industries, and forced acculturation. Many of their spiritual practices went underground. Yet, in recent decades, there has been a powerful resurgence of cultural pride and spiritual revival.
Today, the Nukini are actively reclaiming their ancestral knowledge, language, and sacred rituals. Their youth are being initiated into spiritual practices, their territory is increasingly recognized and protected, and their voices are reaching beyond the forest to share their stories and medicines with the world.
The Serra do Moa National Park: Guardians of Sacred Land
The Serra do Moa National Park is one of the most ecologically rich areas of the Amazon and forms a critical part of the Nukini territory. This vast protected area contains mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and rare plant and animal species. The Nukini are among its primary guardians, living in harmony with the forest and defending it against illegal logging, mining, and exploitation.
Their relationship with this land is spiritual and practical. It is here that they hunt, gather, cultivate sacred plants, and perform their ceremonies. The forest is not just home—it is teacher, healer, and sacred space.
Recanto Verde: A Community of Healing and Preservation
One of the most active and culturally vibrant Nukini communities is Recanto Verde, located near the Moa River. This village is home to Chief Xiti and his family, who are key partners of Sacred Snuff. Chief Xiti is not only a political leader but also a spiritual guide and respected medicine man.
In Recanto Verde, ancestral knowledge is alive and practiced. Families come together to harvest and prepare sacred plants, and the younger generation is taught to walk in two worlds—preserving tradition while navigating modern society. Our partnership with Recanto Verde is built on mutual respect, ethical trade, and the shared intention of preserving Indigenous culture and medicines.
Nukini Shamanism: The Spirit of the Forest
Nukini spirituality is deeply intertwined with the natural world. Their shamans, or pajés, work with medicinal plants, ancestral prayers, and forest spirits. The jaguar, their totemic protector, is often invoked in healing ceremonies for strength and guidance.
One of the most important spiritual practices among the Nukini is the use of Ayahuasca, known as “Nixi Pãe.” It is used for healing, vision, and spiritual realignment. Ceremonies involve singing, prayer, and communion with the forest’s spirit beings.
Another key tool in their healing work is Rapé (pronounced ha-PAY), a sacred snuff made from powdered plants, ashes, and often a strong form of tobacco such as Sabia. Rapé is used to clear mental fog, ground the body, align the spirit, and prepare the individual for ceremony or prayer.
Nukini Rapé: Medicine from the People of the Onça
The Nukini are known for producing some of the most refined and aromatic Rapé blends in the Amazon. Their deep knowledge of plants and attention to detail results in medicines that are both potent and smooth. At Sacred Snuff, we are honored to offer a curated selection of Nukini Rapé, crafted by trusted artisans from Recanto Verde and neighboring communities.
